MSc Managing Information Technology
The MSc Managing Information Technology (MIT) provides students with the skills necessary to succeed in an IT management role. This innovative and dynamic programme draws upon the expertise of the Informatics Research Institute (IRIS) which was recently awarded the maximum 6* rating after the most recent UK Research Assessment Exercise. IRIS is the largest information systems research group in the UK.
This programme is available in the following modes:
- 12 month full-time (start in September or January)
- 36 month part-time (start in September)
Placement Year
Students undertaking this programme on a full-time basis have the opportunity to undertake a one year professional (paid) placement following the successful completion of their first two semesters.
An additional fee will be payable and the programme will then take 2 years to complete.
The Programme
- offers a comprehensive range of contemporary topics that encourage students to explore specific areas though study of optional modules and through the dissertation process
- is underpinned by a critical and holistic approach to IT management
- draws upon our internationally recognised group of academics from the ISI and elsewhere
- uses a wide range of external speakers noted for their specialist knowledge
- emphasises the value of debate and interaction with colleagues and staff
- recognises the needs of postgraduate study – MSc students are taught separately from undergraduate students and have the use of dedicated postgraduate IT resources
This programme enable our graduates to become effective 21st Century IT managers capable of a critical reflection of their practice and that of others, and an understanding of the strategic importance and context of IT in organisations.

Career Progression
This programme is designed to enable recent graduates of IT, Computer Science or Information Systems, and particularly those currently in non-IT oriented work, to develop technical or IS management career paths. Employers are particularly attracted to graduates of this programme who have a mixture of hands-on technical skills and in-depth knowledge of the organisational context of information systems.

- A comparable qualification from an overseas or UK institution
- International students must provide evidence of proficiency in English–IELTS 6.5 band score or a TOEFL score of 575 or above (232 computer based) with a TWE of 4.0 or above are appropriate

Placement Years
Students who take the option of a professional placement year generally enjoy much better employment prospects!
Students on all full-time Master courses - with the exception of The Salford MBA - can choose the option of a placement year in place of the dissertation normally undertaken in Semester 3. This includes International Students, who can normally extend their visa to cover the additional year of the programme.
The fee for the Professional Placement Year taken as an option on a Master course is £1,600.
