Salford Business School Live Projects

A unique opportunity to co-operate with Salford Business School...

At the Information Systems Institute, our Live Projects have helped us forge partnerships with industry, commerce and public sector organisations since 1986. We will continue to build partnerships as the Salford Business School, which was formed in 2006.

How can you get involved?

You can either be a Client and/or a Prize Sponsor.

  • Clients are organisations that have a business problem and would like an external consultant to investigate the issue and where possible address it.
  • Prize Sponsors are organisations that would like to provide a reward to recognise outstanding student performance.

Why should you be a client?

  • You want to play a part in the development of future manageent professionals.
  • You have a business problem that you would like a team of university students to provide a perspective on and potentially develop a solution to.
  • You are interested in recruiting graduates and would like to see their potential as they develop.
  • There is no charge for you to use our student consultancy services.

What is expected of a client?

  • To provide a non-critical business problem that requires a solution.
  • To assign a contact with whom the students can liaise.
  • To refund any expenses incurred by us.

Your main contribution is to provide a meaningful context for the students' learning experience. Typical projects are not time critical, and are usually equivalent to between three and six months work of an Information Systems or Information Technology specialist.

What are typical Live Projects?

Live Projects are unique multi-programme student learning experiences where second year students from the following programmes collaborate on real life consultancy projects.

  • B Sc (Hons) Business and Management Studies
  • B Sc (Hons) Business Studies with Financial Management
  • B Sc (Hons) Business Studies with Hum Res Man
  • B Sc (Hons) Business Studies with Internat Bus Man
  • B Sc (Hons) Business and Management Studies with Law
  • B Sc (Hons) Business Studies with Marketing Man
  • B Sc (Hons) Business Studies with Quant Bus Man
  • BA (Hons) Hospitality Management
  • BA (Hons) Tourism Management
  • BA (Hons) Hospitality and Tourism Management
  • BA (Hons) Sport and Leisure Management
  • BA (Hons) Leisure and Tourism Management
  • BA (Hons) Gambling and Leisure Management
  • B Sc (Hons) Business Information Technology

Each team works on a real life, open-ended project developed in consultation with a client organisation.

  • Under academic guidance, Live Projects let students consolidate the knowledge they gain on the programme and apply it to a specific business problem.
  • Live Projects encourage students to develop a broad range of ‘transferable’ skills, initiative and self-confidence.
  • Project clients benefit from additional resources to carry out work that might otherwise be neglected, at minimum cost.
  • Organisations may also benefit from fresh perspectives on their business needs.

Teams of about 12 students engage with a business problem for 6 months. The projects run from September through to May. Each student works about one and a half days a week on their team's project - their time is split between achieving the clients’ and their own academic objectives.
