- Who can take a placement year?

This is a Flickr badge showing items in a set called Placement Fair 2009-10. Make your own badge here. - From September 2010 all new BSc, BA and MSc students (with a few exceptions*) can apply for a one year Professional Placement. This includes overseas students, who can extend their visa to cover the extra year of a programme. Students who complete a Foundation Degree and would like to progress to the final year of the Business and Management Studies degree suite will also have the opportunity to take the placement option.
- *Students on the following programmes are, currently, ineligible to take a Professional Placement Year: MSc Information Security, MSc Information Security Management and The Salford MBA.
- Why take a placement year?
- Salford graduates who have completed a one year placement have higher marks than average and much better employment prospects.
- What placements are there?
- You will be provided with opportunities related to your degree. We currently have placement students in over 30 companies in Greater Manchester and elsewhere in the UK. It is possible to undertake your placement outside the UK as well. You will have opportunities to meet employers at our Placement Fair, and local and regional employer presentations. You will regularly be circulated with vacancies through the Salford Business School intranet, and through the Careers service.

- What support do we provide?
- Students are provided extensive support in the application process. This includes regular workshops, personal guidance, practice test and interview sessions. We also employ ex-placement students to provide mentor support.
- In 2009-10 we employed final year ex-placement students to help other students to secure placement positions. They speak here about this experience.
- Is a placement guaranteed?
- We support you in the application process but all placements are a contract of employment and thus the employer has the final say. Postgraduate students must pass their first two semesters in order to start a one year placement.
- Do you get paid?
- All one year placement positions are paid. The average salary in 2008-9 was £14,000.
- Do you have to pay fees?
- Unlike most Universities in the UK, BSc/BA students do not have to pay any fees for the placement year. The fee for MSc students is currently £1,645.
- When can you do your Placement Year?
- For BSc students the placement takes place between their second and final year. For MSc students the placement takes place after their first two taught semesters so that the MSc takes 2 years in total to complete. This is made up of 2 semesters of taught study, a 12 month placement and a 3 month writing up period. Thus the MSc is made up in total of 12 months in the University and 12 months on placement.
- Assessment?
- We have a thorough assessment process and the placement mark counts towards your degree. The quality of our placement programme is externally recognised by the City and Guilds Licentiateship award (LCGI) which is available to all our students completing a placement.
- Are there any similar schemes of which I should be aware?
- Yes! Together with the Unite with Business project, we run a scheme that provides paid, 20 day work experience opportunities open to all final year undergraduate students, postgraduate students and graduates.

Professional Placement Year Case Study
High flying Conor Rocks and Liam Brown are MSc Project Management students on their 12 months placement with passenger-jet manufacturer Airbus Industries in Filton, Bristol.
The students won their prestigious placements against stiff opposition from students across Europe. Liam is working in a role focused on helping with a major Lean Manufacturing programme and Conor works on a Quality Improvement programme. Both jobs are heavily involved with developing ‘state-of-the-art’ visual management techniques which allow senior executive to see the progress of a project or programme at a glance.
Liam and Conor’s experiences on the MSc Project Management degree have helped them understand these diagrammatic techniques so that they could get involved and contribute to the work of the largest jet manufacturer in the world from day one.
Both students are delighted to be at Airbus – an exciting place to work producing a world renowned and easily recognised product. Liam says that his placement is ‘an ideal opportunity to improve my project management skills in a complex and highly successful business’; Conor remarks that his placement is ‘an excellent way of developing my understanding of project management whilst giving my CV an impressive edge in an extremely competitive environment for graduates’.
The Salford Business School students will complete a dissertation based on their experiences during their professional placement year at Airbus.
