Dr M E Burke is pleased to announce the successful award of an EPSRC Research Grant for a total value of 1.3 million. The research project is concerned with the Digital Economy and will be conducted with the Universities of Brunel, Dundee, Edinburgh and University College, London. The project is called TOTeM: Tales of Things and Electronic Memory.

Staff Profile

Dr. Burke’s research is based in the area of Information Management. She currently holds a position at the University of Salford’s Business School within the Information Systems Group which was awarded a 6* rating in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise. In addition she is a Visiting Fellow at the Jagiellonian University in Poland and has held visiting posts with the Eotvos Lorand University, Budapest, Budapest University of Technology and the Nicholas Copernicus University in North Poland. This work has led to two books; keynote speeches at international conferences; a significant number of conference papers and related book chapters.

Nationally, Dr. Burke has undertaken external work for Sheffield University, Hertfordshire University and currently for Strathclyde University’s Department of Computer and Information Sciences. She was recently appointed as a member of the ESRC College, and is a member of the Editorial Board for the journals Management Decision; Journal of Documentation; New Library Review and the International Journal of Electronic Marketing and Retailing. She also reviews for other relevant journals including the Journal of the American Society of Information Science and Technology.

Dr. Burke’s specific teaching and research interests are in information fulfilment; business intelligence and strategies, knowledge management, the knowledge economies and the way in which organization structures and strategies are developing within the transitional economies of Central and Eastern Europe. She was Track Chair for the 2006 IRMA conference on Philosophical Viewpoints in Information Management and was on the Programme Committee for IRMA 2005. She was also a track member and reviewer for ECIS 2005. Dr. Burke has successfully secured, or been involved with, research grants from numerous bodies including TEMPUS JEP; TEMPUS IMG; British Council; Leonardo da Vinci/Socrates ; European Commission Framework V; Telematics Networking for Micro and Small enterprises European project under the auspices of Manchester Telematics and Telework Partnership. She has an international reputation and has undertaken work for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Slovenian Ministry for Science and Technology.

Dr. Burke is co- author of the book “Navigating Business Information” written with Hazel Hall and has published her latest book “The Phenomenal Power of Business Intelligence: Managerial Skills for the 21st century” with Taylor and Francis. She was the winner of the prestigious 1998 John Campbell prize awarded by the Institute of Information Scientists. In addition to her first degree Dr. Burke holds a postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies; was awarded an MBA by the Open University in 1993 and a PhD in 2005 from the University of Salford.
